Livable Communities
The Western Colorado Program helps community partners realize their local-planning and development goals that build healthy and walkable neighborhoods, expand housing and transportation choices, create vibrant downtowns and commercial districts all while preserving valuable wildlife habitat and productive farms and ranches.
Communities must make their own decisions about the future. We provide information, tools and support to help communities explore their options, identify opportunities and barriers, and take advantage of their unique assets in order to create great places.
Envision Tomorrow Projects in Rifle and Glenwood Springs
The Sonoran Institute recently partnered with the cities of Rifle and Glenwood Springs to explore the feasibility of implementing “town-centered” development goals in their local plans. Working with Fregonese Associates, we tested the market and policy feasibility of implementing mixed-use redevelopment in targeted growth areas within each community.
Envision Tomorrow, a suite of urban and regional planning tools, was used to develop a set of market-feasible development prototypes that were used to test different development scenarios and pinpoint specific policy or financial barriers to achieving the community’s development goals.
